4% Rule
As a general rule this is the percentage of your retirement portfolio you can safely withdraw the year after your retirement. Adjust for inflation every year after that. In other words, if you need $40,000 per year from your retirement next egg, you will need approximately $1 million dollars in retirement savings.
Rule of 72
In order to find the number of years it takes to double an investment, divide the rate of return into 72. For example, an investment returning 6% will take approximately 12 years to double (72 divided by 6 = 12).
